Winter Festival -46°C in the Shirak region

On February 25, the -46°C Winter Festival welcomed winter adventure tourism enthusiasts to the Shirak region. The festival is a development brand established by the “Northern Way” local action group within the EU rural development LEADER methodology. Its aim is to boost winter adventure tourism in the north of Shirak by uniting local actors. This year, approximately 500 participants attended the event. The LEADER approach is piloted in Shirak region by the Austrian Development Agency in the framework of the LEAD4Shirak project co-funded by the European Union and Austrian Development Cooperation.

The EU continues to support creative entrepreneurs through the Artbox Entrepreneur programme

On February 20, in the framework of the EU-funded KATAPULT Creative Accelerator programme, the Artbox Entrepreneur project was officially launched with newly selected 24 participants. 23 creative projects that successfully completed the Artbox Incubator programme were showcased at the event. The Artbox Incubator programme provides 8-week career acceleration training during which the new generation of creative entrepreneurs will meet and work with leading mentors to boost their careers.  KATAPULT Creative Accelerator project is implemented by Creative Armenia and AGBU Armenia.

“Open and participatory Government’s agenda in Armenia” event was organised

On the 8th of February, an event “Open and Participatory Government’s agenda in Armenia” was organised in the framework of the EU-funded programme “Future Today: Empowering women, youth and children for deepening democracy in Armenia”, implemented by UNICEF in partnership with UNDP and UNFPA. The overall objective of this event was to evaluate the “Open Government Partnership Armenia 2022-2024” action plan, develop strategic suggestions, and present the evaluation results and suggestions report. The Open Government Partnership is based on the idea that an open government is more accessible, responsive, and accountable to citizens and that improving the relationship between people and their government has long-term benefits for everyone. Therefore, the OGP’s objective is to build a better version of democracy, anchored in open government values of transparency, accountability, public participation, and inclusion. Civil society plays a crucial role in ensuring that the OGP remains a platform for inclusive and participatory democracy.

Youth debate tournament with the participation of representatives from different regions of Armenia

The European Union is always attaching importance to the role of youth in the democratisation processes. Within the framework of the “EU4Youth: Empowered and Active Youth for a more Democratic Armenia Today and Tomorrow” project implemented in cooperation with World Vision Armenia and Jinishian Memorial Foundation, the Youth discussion tournament was held on February 6. Sixteen teams of students representing 70 schools of Aragatsotn, Gegharkunik, Lori, Shirak, and Yerevan participated in several stages of the debate tournament practicing their skills for public debate and evidence-based argumentation.

With EU support, a discussion on labour rights protection in Armenia was held

On February 1, a discussion on Labour rights protection in Armenia was organised by a consortium of three EU-funded NGOs Helsinki Citizens Assembly – Vanadzor, the Union of Employers of Information and Communication Technologies and OxYGen Foundation. The participants of the discussion touched upon the current challenges related to labour rights, in particular, in the field of security and health and in the context of their economic complications. Social dialogue is vital for any organisation, and the mechanism for fueling this dialogue is labour rights. Therefore, labour legislation should not be seen as an obstacle to entrepreneurial freedom, but rather as a tool to better unite around a common project, the development of the company and its activity.

The EU supports women human rights defenders in Armenia

On January 27, the EU-funded project “Women human rights defenders stepping up against gender-based violence in Armenia”, implemented by the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women organised an event to measure the actions, progress and dynamics developed over the last three years as well as the long way to go to change attitudes and stereotypes.

“Resilient Syunik Team Europe Initiative” was launched

On January 18, “Resilient Syunik Team Europe Initiative” was launched. Approximate of €51 million budget, “Resilient Syunik Team Europe Initiative” is a joint initiative of the EU Member States Austria, France, Germany, Poland, and Sweden, as well as Switzerland and the European Investment Bank. The “Resilient Syunik TEI” is aligned with the regional development priorities of the Government of Armenia, as well as the priorities outlined within the Flagship Initiative on Building Resilience in the Southern Regions of Armenia under EU’s Economic and Investment Plan. The main objective of this initiative is to contribute to the sustainable socioeconomic and institutional development of the Syunik region.

Within the framework of the EU-funded “European Media Facility Armenia – Building sustainable and professional media” project, which is implemented by Deutsche Welle media company in partnership with BBC Media Action initiative, Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation, FACTOR Information Center, and HETQ Investigative Journalists, the EU Ambassador to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin took part in the internship event organised by Factor TV. In her speech addressed to the 12 students completing their internship, the Ambassador noted: “As future journalists, you could be the most influential but also the most vulnerable because individuals and lobby groups can target you. A dynamic, pluralistic society needs free, independent, reliable, and responsible media. Thank you to all these media partners who have offered you the chance to discover this demanding journalism constantly fighting against misinformation and fake news.”

The first EuroClub of Young European Ambassadors was established in Oshakan

On December 19, in Oshakan, the team of the Young European Ambassadors from Armenia announced the official launch of the first EuroClub in Armenia – “EuroClub Oshakan”. Ambassador Andrea Wiktorin welcomed this YEAs-led initiative, highlighting its importance for local youth, especially youth from rural communities. The EuroClub was created to serve not only as a platform for developing skills aimed at attracting young people and engaging in civic activities, but also as the best place to present Armenian culture to European peers.

The first social entrepreneurship fund “Via Fund” has been established in Armenia

On December 14, the Launch Event of “Via Fund” – the first Impact Investment Fund for Social Enterprises took place. “Via Fund” is organised and implemented in the framework of “Collaborate for Impact” project, implemented by the European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA) in partnership with Impact Hub Yerevan. The goal of “Via Fund” is to support social enterprises in achieving their goals and expanding their influence, bringing a new culture and experience of impact to the local ecosystem of the Republic of Armenia.

The presentation of the book “50 women who changed the world” took place with the support of the European Union

On December 5, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, within the framework of the “Addressing Gender-Biased Sex Selection and Related Harmful Practices in the South Caucasus: Support to Regional, National and South-South Interventions” project implemented by UNFPA and funded by the European Union the “50 women with disabilities that changed the world” book was presented. The European Union, through numerous mechanisms and with the involvement of other actors, contributes to the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, extending a hand to the government’s reform efforts, especially after May 5, 2021, when the Armenian Parliament adopted the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The EU support in this direction will continue.
