Representatives from Eastern Partnership countries join Energy Community regional workshop on use of renewables in transport

Officials and energy experts from South East and Eastern Europe recently met in Vienna for a two-day workshop on increasing the use of renewable energy in transport. Organised by the Energy Community Secretariat with support from the European Commission’s TAIEX instrument, the workshop focused on helping countries implement EU rules and meet their 2030 renewable energy targets.
The event brought together representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine. Armenia, an Observer to the Energy Community, and Azerbaijan also took part.
Transport accounts for around a third of final energy use across the Energy Community. Its Contracting Parties have committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in transport to 14% by 2030. Replacing fossil fuels with sustainable fuels and electricity could help reduce air pollution and dependence on energy imports, while creating new opportunities for regional producers.
Representatives from Austria, Croatia, the Netherlands and France shared their experience in developing regulations, establishing responsible institutions and preparing fuel suppliers and other businesses to implement the new rules. Participants also discussed upcoming EU requirements for renewable energy in road, maritime and air transport, as well as infrastructure for electric mobility.
