Not in education, training nor in employment: new podcast from European Training Foundation on young people excluded from active life

13/07/2022

The European Training Foundation has released a new episode of its ‘Skills Factory’ podcast, titled “Not in education nor employment: What’s the problem?”.

The programme analyses the situation in the EU and the EU’s neighbourhood with young people between the ages of 20 and 29 who are not not in education, training or employment, or so called NEETs.

The share of NEETs in the EU neighbouring countries ranges between 20% and 35%. In particular, in the Eastern Partnership, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia show higher NEET shares than other countries, ranging from 1/3 to 1/4 of the youth population in 2019.

In the EU, NEETs account for about 10% of young people, with the highest rates in Italy, Greece and Spain and the lowest in the Nordic countries.

The ETF expert, Ummuhan Bardak, explains what too many NEETs really mean for the economy and society, why young people stay at home and how public authorities can increase youth participation in education and the labour market.
