Online roundtable: the value of a statistical life in road safety – from method to policy

01/09/2026

On 21 September, the EU-funded Eastern Partnership Road Safety Observatory will hold an online roundtable ‘The value of a statistical life in road safety: from method to policy’.

This open discussion brings together speakers and participants from across the Eastern Partnership region to examine why the value of a statistical life (VSL) matters for road safety policy, and how it can be applied in practice.

The session will look at why new guidance on VSL was needed, and how new methods have been used in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, sharing regional results and showing how VSL estimates feed into cost-benefit analysis and investment prioritisation.

Rather than a series of one-way presentations, the event is designed as an open exchange between speakers and participants, centred on what these estimates mean in practice for government decision-making.

Those willing to participate are invited to register in advance.

The Eastern Partnership Road Safety Observatory is a joint initiative of the five Eastern Partner countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine – with the common goal of reducing road casualties by 50% by 2030.
