European Researchers’ Night in Armenia welcomes everyone in Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor
European Researchers’ Night is an annual pan-European public initiative held simultaneously in many European and associated countries on the last Friday and Saturday of September. It was created to bring research and researchers closer to citizens, especially young people, schoolchildren, university students, families and the wider public.
European Researchers’ Night in Armenia (ERNA) is part of the European Researchers’ Night, the largest science engagement initiative in Europe, funded by the European Union through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). MSCA funds excellent research and innovation and equips researchers at all stages of their career with new knowledge and skills through mobility across borders and exposure to different sectors and disciplines.
In Armenia, ERNA will take place on 25–26 September, simultaneously in Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor.
Held under the motto “Science for Citizens. Citizens for Science: Meeting Challenges, Shaping Futures,” it aims to make science visible, accessible and human. The events will help bridge the communication gap between science and society and show that researchers are people like all of us, with their own interests, creativity and everyday lives, whose work has a real impact on society, the economy and our future.
Through science shows, live demonstrations, experiments, games and interactive activities, visitors will be able to ask questions, test ideas, discover why things happen and step into the role of a researcher.
The Night is designed for everyone: from young children and their parents to teenagers, university students, teachers, lecturers, adults and older people. It will welcome both science enthusiasts and those who have previously thought that science was not for them.
The programme will cover a wide range of scientific and research fields. Particular attention will be given to information technology and key European Union priorities, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the European Green Deal and the EU Missions. Every subject will be presented as clearly and engagingly as possible and connected to everyday life.
At the main event, held at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, in Yerevan, visitors will be able to explore six complementary thematic zones, each presenting science in its own distinctive way:
- EU Corner: EU funding programmes and initiatives will be presented here, including the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, COST and others, alongside successful projects implemented with their support.
- Edutainment Zone: Science will be presented through play and entertainment, including interactive experiments, science shows, physics puzzles and other activities for families.
- Exhibits Zone: Armenia’s historical and contemporary scientific, technological and innovative achievements will be showcased. One section will highlight the contributions of Armenian scientists and inventors worldwide to the development of global science and technology, as well as measuring and control equipment from the early years of Armenia’s technology industry. Another section will present current research and educational activities in Armenia, its research institutes and universities, and prominent Armenian scientists.
- Women in Science: Women researchers will present their work, scientific journeys and the achievements of renowned women scientists, challenging stereotypes about science and inspiring girls and young women.
- Career Orientation Corner: Organisations and professionals representing the research, education, healthcare, technology, public and private sectors will introduce science- and research-related professions, career opportunities and development pathways, helping young people make informed choices about their future professions and research careers.
- The Other Side of Researchers Stage: Researchers will present not only their professional work but also their hobbies, creative talents and interests beyond science, revealing the lively and human side of being a researcher.
Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) in Armenia will engage visitors through interactive activities in the Edutainment Zone and support the EU Delegation to Armenia at its booth, helping young people discover EU opportunities and the links between science, research, innovation, and everyday life.
In 2027, the ERNA will also take place in Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor, on 24–25 September.
