MEPs call on EU to consider naval operation in the Black Sea

On 22 October, Members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which they strongly condemned Russia’s escalation of its war against Ukraine in the Black Sea and called on the European Union to consider deploying a naval operation in the Black Sea.
The call comes after the latest deadly attacks against civilian merchant vessels and amid increased attacks from Russia on Ukrainian export routes and maritime infrastructure. The Black Sea is a key corridor for Ukrainian agricultural exports, including grain, which supplies international markets and contributes to global food security.
The resolution stresses that Russia is the overall driver behind the deteriorating situation in the Black Sea region.
The Parliament said that the EU and its member states should consider deploying an EU naval operation in the Black Sea, stressing that freedom of navigation and maritime security are part of securing NATO’s eastern flank, the Black Sea region and the Danube delta. MEPs also called on NATO to consider a Black Sea initiative. They also stressed the need for EU and NATO support to Bulgaria and Romania in tracking hostile drones, faster implementation of the EU Black Sea maritime security hub, and the use of unspent SAFE funds to address regional security threats.
