BRUSSELS – EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has urged European consumers to support Armenia’s democratic path by purchasing the country’s produce, sharing a personal story of making homemade jam from Armenian apricots.
In a recent Facebook post, Kos highlighted the geopolitical significance behind the fruit on European supermarket shelves following her recent visit to Armenia. The Commissioner explained that apricots symbolise a broader political shift occurring in the nation.
“When you go to the supermarket, watch out for Armenian apricots, plums or cherries,” Kos wrote. “It’s a chance to do something small that can help Armenian farmers and support their country’s democratic choice.”
According to Kos, in response to Moscow’s restrictions on imports of Armenian fruit and flowers, the EU opened its markets to many of these agricultural products to cushion the impact on Armenian farmers and reinforce the country’s sovereign choices.
Kos shared that during her trip to Armenia last week, she personally brought a large basket of apricots back to Brussels.
