Project Description
Through the EU4BiodiversityinSevan: Enhancing Lake Sevan Ecosystem Restoration Project (the Project), UNDP seeks to create an enabling environment for the long-term sustainability of Lake Sevan by strengthening institutions, implementing ecosystem restoration measures, promoting biodiversity conservation, and establishing sustainable financing mechanisms.
The project aims to create an enabling environment for the effective restoration and sustainable management of Lake Sevan’s ecosystem. This will be achieved through strengthened institutional capacities, enhanced effectiveness of restoration measures, and the introduction of sustainable financing mechanisms.

Specific Objective
The EU4Biodiversity in Sevan: Enhancing Lake Sevan Ecosystem Restoration Project is a 3-year initiative funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project aims to create an enabling environment for the restoration and sustainable management of the Lake Sevan ecosystem through strengthened institutional capacities, effective restoration measures, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable financing mechanisms.
The project has the following 3 objectives:
1. Strengthening of Governance and Institutional Capacity
2. Ecosystem Restoration and Biodiversity Conservation
3. Sustainable Financing and Stakeholder Engagement
Overall Objective of the project is to foster an enabling environment for the restoration of the Lake Sevan ecosystem by:
• Strengthening management capacities of relevant institutions;
• Implementing effective ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation measures;
• Enhancing long-term environmental and financial sustainability.

1. Institutional, technical, and human capacities for Lake Sevan ecosystem management are strengthened
• Development of digital biodiversity monitoring and reporting tools;
• Assessment of the industrial fishing value chain and establishment of sustainable fisheries management systems.
2. Effectiveness of ecosystem restoration measures for biodiversity conservation is improved
• Riverbank and riverbed restoration measures supporting Sevan Salmo populations;
• Comprehensive forest cover assessment and revision of forest rehabilitation plans for the Lake Sevan basin.
3. Financial sustainability of Lake Sevan ecosystem restoration is enhanced
• Increased public and private sector engagement in ecological restoration;
• Improved financial sustainability of Sevan National Park through recreational development;
Promotion of sustainable business practices through economic incentives and disincentives
