Europol celebrates International Day of Police Cooperation
On 7 September, Europol is marking the International Day of Police Cooperation together with its partners to recognise the central role the network plays in tackling the most serious threats against the EU’s internal security.
“Connecting investigators, expertise, and information across national boundaries is at the heart of Europol. When those connections are strong, law enforcement is better equipped to respond to the threats that cross borders,” Europol said in a press release.
To facilitate law enforcement cooperation, Europol brings together at its headquarters over 300 Liaison Officers representing more than 50 countries. Europol’s Secure Information Exchange Network Application (SIENA) connects more than 3,800 national competent authorities, with more than 25,000 end users connected to the system.
“From one country to the next, across Europe and beyond, there are investigators contributing to this cooperation, and ultimately, to the security of their communities,” the press release said. “Despite working across different environments, wearing different uniforms, and speaking different languages, they are part of a wider network that depends on cooperation. Sharing information, building connections and working with colleagues across borders all contribute to one mission: making communities safer.”
From the Eastern Partner countries, Europol co-operates on an operational basis with Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
