EU and German partners launch nature-based wastewater solutions to protect Armenia’s Lake Sevan
GAVAR & VARDENIS – In a concerted effort to safeguard one of Armenia’s most vital natural assets, representatives from the European Union, the German research institute UFZ, and the EU4Sevan+ project team recently concluded a field mission across the Gavar and Vardenis municipalities to advance eco-friendly wastewater treatment solutions.
During the July visit, delegates met with local leadership and evaluated key target sites in Lechap, Sarukhan, and Lusakunk. The mission focused on introducing decentralised, nature-based wastewater treatment systems—low-cost, sustainable setups that harness natural processes to filter and clean wastewater before it reaches surrounding ecosystems.
Unlike traditional centralised infrastructure, which can be resource-intensive to build and maintain in rural settings, eco-friendly systems empower local communities to manage their water resources independently while mitigating pollution risks.

The initiative is part of “EU4Sevan+: Sustainable Water Management for Resilient Community Development in Armenia” co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Government, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The projects primary goal is to empower Lake Sevan communities with sustainable water management tools, enhancing long-term environmental and economic resilience across the basin.
