Armenia is making progress in its path towards visa-free travel with the EU!

25/05/2026

On May 20, Johannes Luchner, Deputy Director-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission met with Arpine Sargsyan, Minister of Internal Affairs on the occasion of the second Senior Official Meeting on the visa liberalisation dialogue to discuss the first progress report’s recommendations across the four blocks (i) security of travel documents; ii) border, migration and asylum management; iii) public order and security issues; and iv) fundamental rights issues related to the freedom of movement, as well as the next steps for phase 2, which will look at the implementation of the reforms.

The first progress report on the implementation of the Action Plan on Visa Liberalisation (VLAP) handed over to the Government on 5th May was a key milestone of the EU-Armenia summit. The report assessed the first set of benchmarks (phase 1) looking at the legislative and policy framework in all the areas covered by the VLAP. It shows Armenia is taking effective steps to strengthen travel document security, migration and border management. These are crucial requirements of the visa liberalisation dialogue.

Armenia is also strengthening cooperation with Frontex. The EU’s European Border and Coast Guard Agency and Armenian Minister of Internal Affairs have agreed on a new working arrangement on border and migration management which sets out how the two sides will work together on training, exchange of expertise, and risk analysis, with the complete details published in the news release.

The EU and Armenia will continue working together to bring its citizens closer and create more opportunities for education, professional exchanges, and contacts across Europe.
