European Political Community starts in Yerevan ahead of first-ever EU-Armenia bilateral summit
Today, the eighth meeting of the European Political Community will bring together leaders from across the continent in Yerevan, Armenia, under the motto ‘Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe’.
Heads of state and government will discuss how to cooperate more closely and coordinate action to strengthen democratic resilience, advance connectivity, and reinforce economic and energy security.
The summit will be co-chaired by António Costa, the President of the European Council, and Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
The meeting will take place ahead of the first-ever EU-Armenia bilateral summit. The summit will bring together President Ursula von der Leyen and President António Costa, representing the European Union, and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, representing Armenia. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas will also participate.
At the summit, leaders will review recent progress in bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation, particularly in the areas of economy, connectivity and security. They will also discuss joint efforts to enhance stability and sustainable growth in the South Caucasus. The agenda will also cover regional and global developments, including in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“Guided by shared values and a commitment to international law and the rules-based international order, this milestone summit between the EU and Armenia will deepen bilateral cooperation as well as mark an important investment in increased peace, connectivity and prosperity in the South Caucasus,” President Costa said.
Key outcomes of the summit will include the launch of an EU-Armenia Connectivity Partnership, covering cooperation on transport, energy, digital and people-to-people contacts, with dedicated high-level dialogues on connectivity and transport. This will be complemented by initiatives to mobilise private EU investment in Armenia.
Both sides will take concrete steps to deepen security and defence cooperation, including through the establishment of the new EU Partnership Mission in Armenia.
Finally, leaders will witness the initiation of a working arrangement between the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
A joint press conference by the leaders is expected following the Summit.
